As salaam alaikum Reader, It’s been a while and I pray you are well. In this time I believe that tahhajud is not ‘optional’. It’s not fardh… we know that. At the same time if we truly understand the battle for the hearts, souls and minds of ourselves and our children happening from every direction … we will understand that tahhajud is not truly optional. There are moms with 10 yr old girls sexting on apps, children barely teenagers addicted to porn, university students coaxed into legal and illegal drugs and questioning their sexuality, identity, faith… May Allah help us to understand the reality of the time we are in and to take the firm handholds He has given us. At the beginning and end of the day Allahuakbar. Allah is greater… Greater than porn addictions, junk food, legal and illegal drug addictions… all of it. Our job as parents is to believe in that truth and serve as guides, reminders, and connections to that reality for our children. Parenting is first and foremost an amanah. From Allah we all come and to Him we are all returning. In Him, with Him and by Him do we derive any and all power and authority. When we remember this we can parent even through the darkest times from a place of divine trust over panic. We can parent with the authority entrusted, the love embued, and our faith permeating. May Allah make us to seek Him in the ways most pleasing to Him. May we parent as an amanah from and to Him. He has not abandoned parent or child if we seek Him. Just imagine Allah has said of prayer in the last third of the night, ‘who is asking so I can grant Him’ It gives me chills… melts my heart…Allahuakbar. What a kind and generous Lord we have. So again, reminder to myself and others as we parent during these challenging times… in my opinion, tahhajud may not be fardh… but it’s not ‘optional’ either. Just like it’s not ‘optional’ to wear a sweater and button up when going out in a snowstorm…. It’s not optional to pack water when youre headed to the park or beach in the heat of summer… it’s not optional to have your bags packed and ready when your heading out the door to travel imminently… The reality of your time and place dictate the level of preparedness, skill and resources required to navigate your experience successfully. Maybe I didn’t need to wear a coat outside 3 months ago… but now it’s January… and it’s freezing… and unless I want to freeze to death I’d better go out my coat on. A reminder to myself first and foremost, for ourselves, for our children, for our ummah… all those ‘extras’ are not optional for the one that sees even a glimpse of our reality. Tahhajud, Salawat, zikr, reading Quran, salat Duha, raghiba, fasting Mondays and Thursday… whatever Allah has facilitated for you as a means of gaining nearness, insight, spiritual clarity … seek it and hold on to it like your life depends on it. The sleepers ran to the cave, let us to run to Allah and seek a way to Him by Him. May Allah forgive us our shortcomings and facilitate good for us by His grace and mercy.
