As salaam alaikum Reader,
I pray this message finds you well.
Who doesn't love a good story? Its how we learn and how we relate.
The Quran is full of fascinating true stories. The youth of the cave, Yusuf and his brothers, Prophet Ibrahim as a young man, Prophet Ibrahim, Hajer and Ismail, Musa and Harun, Musa and the children of Israel, Zulaykha, Maryam and Isa...and the list goes on and on. But there is something important to remember, Allah is not telling us these stories just so we can marvel at what an amazing story-teller He is. These stories are not for awards or accolades. These stories are even beyond true, I would say. These stories contain truth. Truth that permeates time, space, and place. These truths often permeate even gender, culture, or society. These are stories of human beings and human experiences. These are stories of often exceptional people who contained within their exceptionality are examples for us to embody and see ourselves. It is not enough that we read the Quran as stories of 'other people from long ago'. Nor is it enough that we read the Quran and see Prophets and holy people who are more like untouchables that we could never aspire to so why take them as intimate role models anyway.
How would our lives changed if we viewed their stories as our own. What would happen if we asked ourselves what Allah was teaching us by relating these stories, or if we thought about how close or distant to the various characters in the stories we are?
Also, the Quran was revealed not to 'us', but to Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Who is this man that could contain and understand and relate these stories to us?
The Quran is so much more than the stories it contains, and the stories it contains are so much more than just recollections of times and peoples gone past. I remind myself and you Reader to embrace these stories as our own. See ourselves in them - good guys, bad guys, holy men, heedless men and all.
May Allah allow us to benefit from His countless outpouring of blessings. May Allah bless us to cherish the Quran, His uncreated speech and to honor and benefit from it by His mercy, permission and favor.
