I pray this message finds you well.

​

SubhanAllah, the new year is here. I wanted to chat just quickly about the beauty of this blessed month Muharram. It is both the first of the holy months, in that its the first month of our Islamic calendar; and the last of the holy months in that it comes the last in a procession of holy months that preceded it, namely Dhal-Qada and Dhal-Hijja. This month tapers off the hajj season and also puts a cap on a particular type of flood of barakah.

We often talk about seasons...of the year - Spring , summer, Fall, winter; and of life, youth, adolescence, mid-life, etc., and I want to draw our attention to the spiritual season we are in. These past three months have been months of immense opening, gravity, and favor. Allah says in the Quran that these months have been sacred since the beginning of creation. So much so that He speaks against those people who would play with time by 'switching' around the months so they could do in the sacred months what was not permitted (ie fighting wars...).

So what's the point...well the point is that every time is not like every other time...whether we recognize it or not.

​

Every time is not like every other time and we must ask Allah to make clear to us what time we are in and what is the appropriate focus and action for this time.

​

Every time is not like every other time, and what might be fine, good, or even compulsory in one season, whether it be the season of the year, time of day, or season of life or time itself, may require a different disposition and level of attention depending on the time we find ourselves at the present.

​

Much of what was discussed is relevant for all times, as the spiritual reality of time shifts even throughout the day and night, but particularly for this time as we near the end of the season of the sacred months.
